Unemployed!
I'm feeling well wierd today as I left my job. I started with LloydsTSB when it was just Lloyds Bank back in September 1979 - in IT as a programmer. I've been there ever since, progressing from programming to design, system test, team leading, project managing, business analysis and most other jobs in between. Ended up being an IT Implementation Management specialist working on many of the Bank's major implementations over the last 10 years or so.
But earlier this year they offered VR and I applied and they accepted and so as of today I left!
It's hard to describe what it's like clearing your desk, deleting old emails and files, packing stuff into a bag to take home, recording the final Out of Office message for the answerphone and emails ... after 27 years of it being my home ...
I had a great send off party last night, and a lovely lunch with the people I work with currently. Left the office about 2pm today ... and sort of wandered London.
... I'm glad to have made the decision to leave. It was the right decision at the right time, and I have some great opportunities opening up for me. But I'm going to miss all my friends terribly - even though I'm determined to stay in touch with many of them - as it's the people who make work fun even when it's hard going and stressful.
So I'm in a funny tired and drained mood, happy and yet incredibly sad.
Congrats on your new-found freedom! It's always great moving on to a new chapter in your life, and you'll soon find you're busier than ever.
ReplyDeleteYou'd better not quit the publishing, though!

More time for Who blogging, that's all! :)
ReplyDeleteBest of luck David - I did much the same thing (although after only 7 years in the job) a couple of months ago and, after the initial feeling of dislocation, wouldn't go back for the world.
ReplyDeleteWell done Dave! You've finally got our of there! It seems eons ago that I sat down next to some guy on the BIT Project and was very pleased to find out he was a massive Doctor Who fan! All the best in doing the stuff you enjoy doing anyway! And was it really 10 years ago that you last saw Clive Barker? (from your last post) - was that the signing you organsied near the old forbidden planet bookshop behind the back of Centrepoint that I helped you out on (well, I collected the raffle money from all the people queing up for Clive's Autograph anyway!)
ReplyDeleteGood Luck
Well, I never. Did you get involved in any OpenVMS implementations that required support from HP/Compaq/Digital? I ask merely out of curiosity as I do OpenVMS support for HP... :-)
ReplyDeleteAll the best for your next life chapter!
Hi KopicBloodaxe
ReplyDeleteNo, I never got involved in OpenVMS ... I'm not sure that LTSB used HP/Compaq type deployments in the areas of the Business I was working on, and my area is more the management/planning/risk side of Implementation rather than the technical.
